About Opal

The purpose of this document is to suggest a set of guidelines for the quality, usability, portability, performance, and functionality of IBIS-AMI models. Model end-users can specify some or all of these guidelines as requirements to model developers as part of the procurement process. It is also expected that many model developers will decide to implement these practices on their own as a matter of sound engineering.

This document does not directly address expectations for the EDA tools, although some guidelines require specific EDA tool capabilities or characteristics in order to be effective or relevant. This document also defines a set of techniques for improving the accuracy and functionality of IBIS-AMI models beyond IBIS 5.0. These techniques are fully compliant with the IBIS 5.0 standard and IBIS 5.0 parser. These techniques have been necessary to provide the simulation accuracy that model end-users demand.

Rather than have each EDA vendor solve these common problems in a different way (as has been the case), SiSoft is publishing these techniques to allow EDA vendors and model developers to handle these issues the same way and thereby ensure model portability. These techniques are being offered to the IBIS committee for discussion and possible inclusion in future versions of the IBIS standard.
